Chapter Thirty-three
âPlease lower your voice, Zachary. Youâre going to wake Aunt Jackie. You know she didnât sleep very well last night.â
âIâm sorry, but I donât need this type of stress on me right now. My plate is full with work, taking care of my aunt, and spending time with you and the kids.â
âHow far apart are Jayâs contractions?â
Zach looked at Aunt Hattie Jean like she was crazy, because he couldnât answer that question. He didnât even ask the nurse or the young lady who had called him later to update him on Jayâs condition. His mind went blank after Mr. Frazier, one of the deputy wardens from Leesworth, called to inform him that Jay was in the early stages of labor and would be delivering the baby before the end of the day. When the man asked him how soon he could get there to sign the paperwork for the social worker, Zach told him he wasnât sure. He shouldâve told the man the truth. He wasnât coming at all. Zach blinked when his aunt asked the question about Jayâs contractions again.
âThey didnât tell me how far apart her contractions were, and I didnât ask. Why is Jay doing this to me? She told those people at the prison that Iâm taking her son, but Iâm not! I never led her to believe I would.â
âBut, Zachary, heâsââ
âNo, Jill, I donât wanna hear it! I am not gonna take that baby! Every day I would have to look at him and be reminded of what his mother tried to do to me. My sister hated me so much that she wanted me dead. Then she almost killed you. I canât live with those thoughts every day for the next decade. Only a fool tortures himself.â
âZach, Iâm not telling you to take the baby,â Aunt Hattie Jean began. âI just want you to go to the prison hospital and check on your sister. Look at the baby and see if you canât love him like you do Nahima.â
Zach hopped up from his seat at the kitchen table. âLet me say this one last time so everyone can hear me: I donât want Jayâs son!â
âTake . . . ta . . . take the . . . the b . . . baby! Take the . . . the baby!â
Everyone turned toward the voice coming from the doorway. It was Aunt Jackie, standing with the support of her walker, crying and pleading. She wanted Zach to take Jayâs baby. She spoke those words with clarity in a gravelly and shaky voice. She hadnât uttered a syllable in over six months. Her family was shocked to silence as she continued to beg Zach to take Jayâs son. Aunt Jackie crossed the threshold slowly, still crying and pleading with her nephew. She inched at a snailâs pace in his direction.
âAuntie, donât do this to me. Please donât. It ainât fair. Donât make me clean up another one of Jayâs messes. I ainât gonna take him. Cry all you want, but I wonât do it.
